Cochlear Implant Evaluation

How do I know if I am a candidate for a cochlear implant? Our Doctors of Audiology are here to help you on your journey!

What testing will be performed at a cochlear implant evaluation?

After a thorough review of your hearing history, we will perform a comprehensive audiological evaluation. A second audiometric test will be performed with hearing aids on to determine performance with amplification. Word testing in quiet and word testing with sentences in the presence of background noise will be performed to assess performance on speech tasks. Finally, a review of testing scores and potential for CI candidacy will be discussed.

Expect to discuss other factors that affect candidacy for a cochlear implant.

  • What are your lifestyle demands? Do you have a passion for music? Work in a noisy or reverberant environment? Do you enjoy specific sports or activities that could affect CI use?

  • Do you have motivation to experiment with hearing aids, in both the implanted and/or contralateral ears? Do you have the ability to travel for surgery and follow up appointments?

  • Can you be flexible, and invest the time and energy necessary for success with an implant? Are you willing to complete a rehabilitation program and learn to use additional accessories?
